DAILY BLOG: Beginning March 26, 2009

After a long day of cycling and the tent is pitched and supper is cooking on the stove, I like to take a few minutes and jot down some notes as I reflect back on the day's events and experiences. I'll often review the digital photos that I've taken as I fast-forward through the hours of the day. On these pages I'll share the daily happenings and offer a few photos that help to capture the moment. You can also view the photo album here.

Please remember that the reason for this journey by bicycle is to raise funds for the Least of These Children's Home and the abandoned and orphaned children of Ghana, West Africa. Please open your heart with a generous donation for these deserving children.

DAY ONE: (California) Central Valley to George Hatfield State Park

I believe that every bicycle journey should begin with fair skies. Kind of a promise of what's to come—or at least of what to hope for. Today was such a day, with a backdrop of deep blues reaching down to emerald green fields, causing the spirits to soar with expectations. Read more here.

DAY TWO: Basalt CG San Luis Reservoir:

The wind had subsided somewhat as night gave way to a splendid morning. The wildflowers in the park sparkled as the early sun illuminated their vivid purples, yellows, and whites. This little known park along the Merced River was a most pleasant surprise to me, but it is time to continue on to see what other surprises await. The ride through Merced County's rich farmland was gentle, leading soon to the town of Newman. Newman is vibrant and alive with an old time charm that appeals to folks like me. A couple of local workers, Brian and Hector, approaced me with a healthy curiosity about the loaded bike and the journey it's involved in. Read more here.
